About Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD)

Toshiba Storage Device Division is a market leader of industry-leading, high-quality storage peripherals. The company's ability to deliver performance-leading optical storage technologies and mobile hard disk drives that meet the specific demands of the business and consumer marketplace have positioned Toshiba SDD as the preeminent provider of storage technologies for the new millennium.

Leading Innovation in the HDD Industry

Toshiba’s constant drive for innovation and success stems back to the company’s first 14-inch drive in 1972. It was the first HDD manufacturer to recognize the potential for putting HDDs in cars to store digital content, launching the world’s first automotive grade hard drive in 1997. In 2000, Toshiba became the first company to successfully market the 1.8-inch HDD. As a leader in emerging technologies and standards, Toshiba in 2004 was the first to announce and ship perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) for HDDs, which is becoming the new industry recording standards to enable greater storage capacity.

As HDD technology continues to advance, Toshiba has pushed the limits on areal density with HDDs that are transforming basic products into compelling digital devices. The company has broken through the standard conventions for where HDD technology is used to help consumer electronics, computing and automotive partners create valuable digital products. At the heart of this innovative technology is Toshiba's Core Technology Center in Ome, Japan, and its U.S. Storage Design Center based in Fremont, California.
